Pathogenesis of Pseudomonas aeruginosa Infections with a Special Emphasis on Bacterial Signal Transduction, Virulence Programs, Secreted Effectors

Presented by: Dr. Joanne Engel, MD, PhD

ASM Distinguished Lecturer
Professor, Departments of Medicine and Microbiology/Immunology, Chief, Division of Infectious Disease, Co-director, Integrative Microbiology Program, University of California at San Francisco

Dr. Engel’s lab focuses on the complex interplay between bacterial pathogens and their human hosts. Her lab discovered the P. aeruginosa type III secretion system and one of its most potent effectors ExoU. Her lab has made important contributions to the understanding of type IV pilin biogenesis. A current focus is on how P. aeruginosa senses surface contact by type IV pili to activate the type III secretion system. (see Studying host-pathogen interactions | The Engel Lab at UCSF).
